Festival Entertainment Guide: How to Program a Multi-Stage Event

Festival entertainment is a logistics problem disguised as a creative one. The creative part — picking acts — is the easy 20%. The other 80% is staffing zones, advancing riders, and keeping crew leads on schedule.

We book festivals in three zones: arrival, midway, and main stage. Arrival is roaming entertainment that builds energy on the way in — stilt walkers and specialty acts work best. Midway is recurring short sets at side stages and food zones. Main stage is the headline moment.

The single biggest mistake we see festivals make is under-staffing the arrival zone. The first 15 minutes of guest experience set the entire tone of the event — and that's the cheapest place to over-deliver.
